Experience

I have my NC certification in English Language Arts Grades 6-9 and have taught four years. I want to tutor because I like the success and relationship involved in one-on-one tutoring. I like helping students figure out their homework and gaining confidence in themselves as they go. I like applying strategies that will benefit the students now and the future. My background as a teacher allows me to better serve students. Middle schoolers not only need subject matter tutoring but help with study skills, time management, and organization. I use a holistic approach that involves the many facets of a student. And, I firmly believe that the affective component in learning needs to be addressed. Students need (deserved) confidence and the will power to work hard even when the work gets difficult. I help by giving reading or math strategies that they can apply to all passages and problems. I have tutored students from 3rd grade to 8th grade in all subjects. I have tutored high school and college students in Reading, ESL, and SAT. Availability: I live in Plaza Midwood, and I'm willing to meet at students' houses or at a library or coffee shop. Rates: My rate is somewhat flexible based on subject matter, frequency, and proximity.

Hobbies

I was an athlete in through college but only in "cat sports": cross country, swimming, and rowing. Now, I'm purely recreational: I run, swim, and do yoga. I'm a huge Carolina basketball fan. I played the French Horn through high school; now, I just listen to others. My college drawing class was one of the most difficult classes I took; it forced me to think in new ways. I still dabble in art. I like to cook; I'm getting into clean eating. I really like to travel. My next trip is Rome! I love to read. Shocker. I read just about anything. I have a cat named Chamomile who is as frisky and personable as a dog.
