Experience

Through my years as a tutor, I have never lost sight of why I enjoy being a tutor. It all stems from the fact that I am an atypical learner. Sometimes I have to make a song or draw a picture to learn the information. Other times it just takes discipline in time invested and rote repetition. The point is that every student learns differently in terms of pacing and the manner of knowledge acquisition. Growing up, I was lucky to have mentors and tutors that understood this and presented information in a way that made sense to me. I still recall the feeling of relief I felt when I finally understood Newtonian Mechanics and the accompanying disbelief at the simplicity of the subject. All that was required was taking the same information and presenting it in a way that allowed me to process and understand it. It is this sentiment that I wish to share and I believe that my experiences personally and professionally uniquely qualifies me to do so. I started volunteering to be a tutor for students at Montclair Elementary during my junior and senior years of high school. And during my undergraduate years, I continued to work part-time as a tutor for middle school and high school students in the triangle area. Over the years, I have had experience in tutoring in almost all of the general sciences and mathematics courses. During high school I took both IB and AP courses. I received enough placement credit for 2 semesters of classes at my university. I received credits and placements out of Spanish, English, Psychology, General Biology and General Chemistry. I waived the credits for the latter two courses in favor of receiving university-level instruction on subject matter that would eventually form the foundation of my current field of study. Also, during my undergraduate years I participated in research in a variety of capacities. I have biological research experience in fields ranging from the evolution of copepods to the global migratory patterns of the loggerhead sea turtle. I also have clinical medical experience resulting in being published as 2nd author in the medical journal, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. In addition to the variety of biology courses, my minor in chemistry exposed me to general chemistry as well as organic, inorganic, and analytical chemistry along with the corresponding labs. This has provided me with sound principles in theory as well as competence in theory application in a laboratory setting. Regarding graduate level testing, I recently took the MCAT in preparation for entry into medical school. Overall I scored in the 91 to 93rd percentile. In the biological sciences section, I scored 14 out of 15, placing me in the 97-99th percentile. Also worth mentioning is that not all of the students I tutored were in need of help in a specific subject. On occasion, students struggling with multiple subjects may just need an adjustment in the environment or manner in which the student approaches the subject matter. I have aided students as well as my peers in utilizing university and community resources, taking advantage of all of the help that is available. Often times, students are simply unaware of the help that is available to them.

Hobbies

I am a health fanatic. I firmly believe that a healthy body is a healthy mind. To this end, I spend much of my time exercising and eating healthy. At the moment, I weight-train as well as compete in mountain bike races. During the off season, I ramp up my weight training while waiting for mountain biking season to open up in earnest. I am a premedical student so if I am not working out, then I am volunteering or shadowing. I try to stay involved and active in the community.
